Eternal Arcadia on Dreamcast: The Japanese Skies of Arcadia, the @barai Disc to Avoid, and Why There Was Never a Sequel
Eternal Arcadia — エターナルアルカディア, printed on the box as ETERNAL ARCADIA — is the Japanese release of the game Western players know as Skies of Arcadia. Sega released it in Japan on 5 October 2000 for the Dreamcast, on two GD-ROMs, product code HDR-0076. It is a role-playing game about sky pirates, made by Sega’s Overworks studio.
It came out in three Japanese editions on the same day, and one of them is a trap: the @barai edition, a cheap trial that locks partway through and can no longer be unlocked. Its producer said in 2002 that she would love to make a sequel. None was made; what came instead was an expanded GameCube version, Legend, and a planned PlayStation 2 version that was cancelled. This guide covers the four Japanese discs and how to tell them apart, why there is no Eternal Arcadia 2, and which searches find the right one.
- Japanese title: エターナルアルカディア (box: ETERNAL ARCADIA), published by Sega (セガ・エンタープライゼス), developed by Overworks; known in the West as Skies of Arcadia
- Dreamcast (2 GD-ROMs): 5 October 2000 · standard edition
HDR-0076, LIMITED BOXHDR-0109, @barai editionHDR-0119 - Avoid the @barai disc if you want to finish the game: it stops partway through, and the unlock keys stopped being sold on 31 March 2002
- No sequel: producer Rieko Kodama said in September 2002 that she would love to make one but was not working on it; none was made
- A port instead: エターナルアルカディア レジェンド for GameCube (26 December 2002,
DOL-P-GEAJ) is the same game with additions; a PlayStation 2 version was cancelled on 1 August 2002 - 2025: Sega filed Japanese trademarks for both titles in January 2025, according to press reports; as of 28 September 2026 nothing has been announced
What is Eternal Arcadia, and why does it have two names?
It is a classic turn-based RPG with airships. Sega’s product page describes it as a fantasy world with added elements of the age of sail and sky pirates, with two battle systems: close-quarters “scramble” battles between characters and monsters, and cannon battles between ships and giant monsters across the sky. The page credits staff behind Sakura Taisen, Dragon Force and Phantasy Star, and names Overworks as the developer.
The name changed on the way west. Sega released it as Skies of Arcadia in North America in November 2000 and in Europe in April 2001, and the Western boxes carry their own codes — 51052 in North America and MK-51052-50 in Europe. So a search for the English title mostly finds Western copies, and a search for the Japanese title in English letters, Eternal Arcadia, finds Japanese ones. The Japanese box also says “For Japan Only” on the back.
How do you tell the Japanese discs apart?
By the product code. Sega’s product page gives each of the three Dreamcast editions its own code and JAN, and Suruga-ya’s records agree; the GameCube port shares a code across its two releases:
| Disc | Released | Product code | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard edition (Dreamcast) | 5 October 2000 | HDR-0076 | The full game on two GD-ROMs |
| LIMITED BOX (Dreamcast) | 5 October 2000 | HDR-0109 | The full game, plus a visual book, a mascot strap, a skull bracelet and a blue sky-pirate flag bandana |
| @barai edition (Dreamcast) | 5 October 2000 | HDR-0119 | A trial locked partway through; the unlock service ended in 2002 |
| レジェンド (GameCube) | 26 December 2002 | DOL-P-GEAJ | The GameCube port with added content, on one 8 cm disc |
| レジェンド budget edition (GameCube) | 20 May 2004 | DOL-P-GEAJ | The same GameCube game, reissued as お買い得版 |
We do not give a list price for the standard edition, because the sources disagree: Sega’s product page and the Media Arts Database give one figure, and Sega’s later software list and the shops give another. More on the @barai disc below; if all you want is to play the game, the standard edition and the LIMITED BOX are the ones to buy. How a Japanese disc runs on a Western console is covered in our import guide to Eternal Arcadia and Illbleed.
How do you spot the @barai edition?
Check the code and the price. The @barai edition was an experiment: Sega’s product page calls it a trial version with a lock partway through the standard game, and Dengeki Online explained at the time that the disc sold in shops for around 1,000円, with the rest of the game unlocked later by paying online. It is not a demo in the usual sense — it is the real game with a gate in it — and the gate can no longer be opened. Sega ended both new @barai key sales and re-downloads of keys already bought on 31 March 2002, so there is no longer any official way to remove the lock.
That makes it an easy mistake for an overseas buyer, because in listing titles it looks like the real thing. Here is what to look for:
- The code
HDR-0119on the spine or back. The standard edition isHDR-0076. (Sega’s later software list givesHDR-0076to the @barai edition as well; the product page and the box sayHDR-0119.) - The words @barai版, お試し版 or trial version in the listing, and a price well below the standard edition.
- A magazine copy. Weekly Famitsu gave the @barai disc away with issue 618 in October 2000. Suruga-ya files that one separately, as エターナルアルカディア~@barai版~[ファミ通付録体験版], code
673-02027; it is the same kind of locked disc. - Other trial discs. A 空賊版 (“sky pirate”) trial, code
610-7810, and in-store demo movies also turn up under the same title. None of them is the full game.
On the day we checked, the @barai edition and trial discs made up a large part of every title search: seven of the first forty eBay results for Eternal Arcadia dreamcast were @barai discs, and Buyee’s search for Skies of Arcadia showed results: 3 (@barai copies: 3). For the history of the @barai system itself, see the import guide.
Why was there never an Eternal Arcadia 2?
Because Sega put the game onto another console instead of continuing it, and then let it rest. In September 2002, while promoting the GameCube version at the Tokyo Game Show, producer Rieko Kodama told GameSpy: “I would love to make a sequel, but were really not working on it yet.” She added that the game had been more popular in the United States than in Japan, and that if a sequel were made, the GameCube had priority because Legend was coming out for it.
The console plan had already changed once. On 1 August 2002, Sega took a PlayStation 2 version of Eternal Arcadia off its release schedule; Famitsu reported Sega’s reason as concentrating its full effort on the GameCube version. That GameCube version, エターナルアルカディア レジェンド, arrived on 26 December 2002. Sega’s page for it says it is not just a port but adds and revises elements throughout, and calls it a “complete edition” — the same game, expanded. Kataban counts ports and remakes as continuations of the original, not as sequels, and a cancelled port as neither.
Since then there has been interest but no game. In January 2020, Skies of Arcadia developer Kenji Hiruta wrote on Twitter that he “really really” wanted to develop the sequel, as USgamer reported. The characters Vyse and Aika appeared in the 2008 PlayStation 3 game Valkyria Chronicles, which shared a director with Eternal Arcadia — a guest appearance in a different game, not a continuation. Neither the Dreamcast game nor Legend is in the 2011 Dreamcast Collection or in Nintendo’s GameCube library for Switch Online.
The most recent sign came in 2025. According to reports by Gematsu and others, Sega filed Japanese trademarks for both Skies of Arcadia and Eternal Arcadia on 16 January 2025, and they were published on 24 January. A trademark filing is not an announcement, and as of 28 September 2026 we found none: the game was not in Sega and Atlus’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 lineup, and it was not among the classic series Sega said in May 2026 it was still reviving.
Where can you buy the Japanese disc today?
Suruga-ya: search the code, without the hyphen. HDR0076 returned only the standard edition on 28 September 2026. Suruga-ya’s own copy was sold out that day; with sold-out items shown there were five listings, all the standard edition (including a disc-only copy and a sample). HDR-0076 with the hyphen adds an unrelated Dreamcast game, グラウエンの鳥籠. The other codes work the same way: HDR0109 finds only the LIMITED BOX, and HDR0119 only the @barai edition. The LIMITED BOX was in stock from ¥17,800 (price as of 28 September 2026). Searching the title mixes in the Famitsu disc, the sky-pirate trial, the store demo and, without the platform, the GameCube version.
Buyee: the title and platform, then read the listing. エターナルアルカディア ドリームキャスト returned 39 listings on 28 September 2026. Only about a dozen were the full game, standard edition or LIMITED BOX; the rest were @barai discs, store demos, the sky-pirate trial, magazines, guidebooks and promotional goods. The code is cleaner but too thin to rely on: HDR-0076 returned one listing. So we link the title search — and the checklist above is what makes it usable.
eBay: the Japanese title in English letters. Eternal Arcadia dreamcast returned 48 listings on 28 September 2026, and all of the first forty were Japanese Dreamcast items: 21 standard editions, eight LIMITED BOXes, seven @barai discs and four demos or samples. Skies of Arcadia dreamcast returned 88, and only two of the first forty were Japanese copies. Adding NTSC-J does not help here: with the Japanese title it raises the share of @barai discs, and with the English title it still finds mostly Western copies.
Why search Kataban for this one?
Because each edition has its own code in the catalog. Checked in a desktop browser on 28 September 2026: HDR-0076 returns one result, the 2000 Dreamcast standard edition; HDR-0109 returns only the LIMITED BOX, and HDR-0119 only the @barai edition — so the @barai disc can be told apart by its code here too. エターナルアルカディア and Skies of Arcadia return all three Dreamcast editions together with the GameCube Legend. The card gives the platform, the 2000 release year, the publisher Sega, the code HDR-0076 and the kana to look under on a Japanese shop shelf (エ).

Sega made a sky-pirate RPG that did better abroad than at home, sold a locked version of it in shops as an experiment, moved it to one console and cancelled it on another, and let its producer say she would love to make a sequel. Twenty-six years later there is a trademark filing and no game. What is left is two GD-ROMs from October 2000 with HDR-0076 on the spine — and a cheaper disc next to it on the shelf that you should leave there.
