Baku Baku Animal on Game Gear: Sega’s Arcade Puzzler in Your Pocket, and the Shop That Drops a Word From Its Name
Baku Baku Animal — in full ばくばくアニマル 世界飼育係選手権, roughly “Baku Baku Animal: The World Zookeeper Championship” — went on sale in Japan on 26 January 1996 as a Game Gear cartridge at 3,800円 before tax. It began as an arcade puzzle game in April 1995, made by Sega AM3, the team that later became Hitmaker, and it went on to the Saturn, Windows and, in Brazil, the Master System.
This is the last Game Gear entry in a series about games that never got a second part, and it is the one that travelled furthest: the Game Gear version was also sold in North America and Europe, as plain Baku Baku, and the game itself reached four home systems. It still never got a sequel.
It is also the entry with the most ways to buy the wrong thing. Five versions share one title, the cheapest of them is a Saturn disc, and Suruga-ya files the Game Gear cartridge under a name that drops a word from the official one.
- Japanese title: ばくばくアニマル 世界飼育係選手権. Published by Sega; the arcade original was developed by Sega AM3
- Game Gear cartridge: 26 January 1996 · 3,800円 before tax · 4 megabits
- Catalogue number:
G-3378, from Sega’s own software list, Sega Retro and Suruga-ya’s trade-in page. The Western Game Gear cartridges are2451(North America) and2451-50(Europe) - Other versions with the same name: arcade (April 1995), Saturn (November 1995, and a budget reissue in 1997), Windows (1996), and a Brazil-only Master System port (1998)
- Re-release: one of the four games on the blue Game Gear Micro in 2020, alongside Sylvan Tale
- Sequel: none. There are two mobile versions (2002 and 2013) and a spin-off, Baku Baku Camera (2015) — ports and a side game, not a Part 2
- Buying it: search ばくばくアニマル ゲームギア at both shops. On 21 September 2026 Suruga-ya had a complete copy at ¥6,000, and four marketplace copies from ¥2,880
What is Baku Baku Animal, and how does the Game Gear version play?
It is a falling-block puzzle game with a zoo in it. English Wikipedia sets out the rule: animal tiles and food tiles fall together, and when an animal lands next to its favourite food — a monkey beside a banana, say — it eats it. The more connected food tiles one animal eats in a single bite, the more points you score, and every bite drops extra blocks into your opponent’s field. You win when the other side cannot place any more blocks.
The story is one line long and does its job. A king is hiring a royal zookeeper for his daughter’s many pets, and you are Polly, one of the applicants, working your way through the other candidates.
Hardcore Gaming 101 calls the Game Gear port “a strong adaptation of the arcade game” and lists what changed to make it fit:
- The screen: there is no room for two fields side by side, so your opponent’s field shrinks to a small box on the right
- The field: smaller overall, with a bottleneck two spaces wide at the top
- A password system: you can pick up again at any stage, which suits a handheld
- The route: Normal mode only lets you play seven of the nine stages, and some opponents move — Master Piggy now turns up on Hard
- The pace: slightly slower and easier than the arcade, with less tenacious computer opponents
Its verdict is that, apart from lacking the Saturn version’s extras, the Game Gear port is “easily one of the best versions of the game”. It also notes that this was the only version released in North America with the story left fully intact. Electronic Gaming Monthly reviewed the Game Gear version too, and its Andrew Baran summed it up as “non-threatening fun anyone can enjoy”.
One thing we could not settle is two-player play on the Game Gear. Sega Retro files the game under Gear-to-Gear Cable–compatible titles, and that link cable exists only for the Game Gear, which points to a head-to-head mode between two handhelds. But neither Hardcore Gaming 101 nor either Wikipedia article describes it, so treat link play as likely rather than confirmed.
Which release is the Japanese cartridge, and what is its code?
The Japanese Game Gear cartridge is G-3378, and for once we have three sources for it.
Sega’s own Game Gear software list gives the row 1月26日 | ばくばくアニマル 世界飼育係選手権 | パズル | 3,800円 | G-3378 | 4M. Sega Retro’s release table gives G-3378 for the Japanese Game Gear release with the same date and price. And Suruga-ya’s trade-in page for the cartridge, management number 166000189, reads 型番 G-3378, with the barcode 4974365133788.
We also checked the numbers around it at Suruga-ya. G3376 returns 忍空2 天空龍への道, G3377 returns 忍空外伝 ヒロユキ大活劇 and G3380 returns バーチャファイターミニ, all matching Sega’s list. G3379 and G3381 are not in Sega’s list, and neither returns a Game Gear game. The block is consistent.
The Media Arts Database has the cartridge as row M753725, with the date, the publisher and 3800円 (税抜), but no schema:productID and no barcode. We added G-3378 to the Kataban catalog on 21 September 2026 from the three sources above.
Then there are the other cartridges and discs with the same name. Sega Retro lists the Western Game Gear release as 2451 in North America (May 1996) and 2451-50 in Europe (June–July 1996), both titled Baku Baku. The Japanese Saturn disc is GS-9040 (10 November 1995), and its budget サタコレ reissue is GS-9144 (25 April 1997). There is a Japanese Windows version from 1996, and a Master System port that Sega’s Brazilian distributor Tec Toy released there in 1998, which Sega Retro describes as almost identical to the Game Gear version. None of the Western cartridges turned up in either Japanese shop on the day we looked, but the Saturn discs turned up everywhere.
What was the list price, and what does it cost now?
Four sources agree: the Media Arts Database records 3800円 (税抜), Sega’s software list prints 3,800円, Sega Retro gives ¥3,800, and Suruga-ya’s 定価 field reads 4,180円 — which is 3,800円 plus today’s 10% tax. The list price is 3,800円 before tax.
On 21 September 2026 Suruga-ya had:
- Complete, in stock: ¥6,000 (marked as a new arrival)
- And a marketplace line at ¥2,880 across four used copies
Every other Game Gear entry was sold out that day. The shop’s trade-in page offered 3,000円 for a copy on 21 September 2026 — half of what it charged for one. Buyee, on 21 September 2026, had exactly two Game Gear listings for this game in total: one cartridge and one manual.
Now compare the Saturn disc. In the same Suruga-ya search on 21 September 2026, the 1995 Saturn release showed a marketplace line from ¥520 across 32 copies, and the budget reissue was in stock at ¥1,400. The Game Gear cartridge costs several times the disc. That is exactly why a title-only search is a trap here: the cheapest price on the page is very likely the wrong machine.
Why was there never a sequel?
Hardcore Gaming 101 puts it plainly. Sega tried several times to add new puzzle series next to Puyo Puyo and Columns, and Baku Baku Animal was one of those attempts — “much like ChuChu Rocket!, it never got the chance to become a franchise”. The same article says it was AM3’s “one and only shot at the puzzle genre”.
What exists instead, honestly listed, is ports and a side game:
- 2002: a mobile phone version — according to Hardcore Gaming 101, a pared-down port of the arcade game for Java phones, distributed in Japan only
- 2013: a second mobile version, which Sega Retro lists for Android and Hardcore Gaming 101 describes as a redesigned release with cuter animals, again Japan only
- 2015: Baku Baku Camera, which Sega Retro lists as a spin-off
None of those is a Part 2. The mobile versions are the same game on new hardware, and the spin-off is a different kind of game that borrows the name. By the standard this series uses — a numbered sequel, or a clearly identified successor under another name — Baku Baku Animal never got one.
We also checked the two Sega download services where older properties were quietly kept alive. Sonic Cafe, the i-mode service from 2001, has no Baku Baku in its full title list; the only Baku is Taisen! Bakudan Daifuugou, a different game. Game Toshokan, the Mega Modem service from November 1990, has nothing either, which is no surprise for a service that began five years before this game did.
The one modern reissue is the same one Sylvan Tale got. On 6 October 2020 Sega released the Game Gear Micro, a keyring-sized console sold in four colours with four games each, and Baku Baku Animal is on the blue model. Hardcore Gaming 101 notes that the Game Gear version is the only one that has had any kind of modern re-release.
Can you buy it today, and which copy should you buy?
Yes, but there is not much of it. Suruga-ya’s Game Gear entries once you show sold-out items: 5. On 21 September 2026 they were:
- ばくばくアニマル世界選手権 — complete, in stock at ¥6,000, with four marketplace copies from ¥2,880 (prices as of 21 September 2026)
- …(箱説なし) — cartridge only. Sold out
- ランクB)… — the shop’s B grade. Sold out
- [説明書のみ]… — the manual on its own. Sold out
- [外箱のみ]… — the outer box on its own. Sold out
The last two are not games. The bracket at the front is the tell: 説明書のみ is a manual, 外箱のみ is a box.
On Buyee, the two Game Gear listings on 21 September 2026 were a cartridge listed as 【GG】ばくばくアニマル世界飼育係選手権 and a manual on its own. Read the listing title before you bid: the manual was the only Game Gear item that the catalogue number found.
A Western cartridge exists, and it is worth knowing which one you are looking at. The North American and European cartridges are called Baku Baku and carry 2451 or 2451-50; the Japanese one says ばくばくアニマル and carries G-3378. If what you want is English text, the Western cartridge is the one to look for. This guide is about finding the Japanese one.
How do you search each shop for it?
Both shops get the same words: the short title plus the platform, ばくばくアニマル ゲームギア.
Suruga-ya: add the platform, and do not type the full title. ばくばくアニマル ゲームギア, with sold-out items shown, gives results: 5; on 21 September 2026 all of them were this cartridge. The trap is the full official title: ばくばくアニマル 世界飼育係選手権 returns zero, because the shop files the cartridge as ばくばくアニマル世界選手権 — without 飼育係, the word for “zookeeper”. The shop’s own spelling returns the same 5. The short title ばくばくアニマル finds them too, but buried: eighteen listings with sold-out items shown, of which five are Game Gear, five are Saturn, and eight are arcade items — a circuit board, instruction cards and manuals. The katakana spelling バクバクアニマル returns the same eighteen.
The catalogue number is little help at Suruga-ya. G3378 with sold-out items shown gives results: 13, and only two are this game (the complete copy and the B-grade one); the rest include junk PlayStation 2 consoles and LCD handhelds. The hyphenated G-3378 returns 104 listings in stock and 254 with sold-out shown, none of them this game on the first page, because Suruga-ya splits the code at the hyphen. The English title returns zero.
Buyee: the same words, and nothing else works as well. ばくばくアニマル ゲームギア returns two listings, and both are this game. The short title ばくばくアニマル returns 19 (Game Gear: only 2; the rest mostly Saturn items). The full official title returns 12, and only the cartridge among them is Game Gear — the rest are Saturn and Windows copies. Buyee, unlike Suruga-ya, does not mind the missing word: ばくばくアニマル世界選手権 returns the same 12.
Neither the code nor the English title works on Buyee. G-3378 shows results: 5, and the only relevant one is the manual. G3378 returns 302, and among the first 99 the only relevant one is that same manual. Baku Baku Animal returns 118, of which the first hundred hold the manual and one Saturn copy. Baku Baku, the Western name, returns 12,018 listings of audio equipment, BAKUNE pyjamas and Bakuman manga, and none of the first 99 is the game.
Why search Kataban for this one?
Because Kataban shows each version as its own entry with its platform on it, which is exactly the problem this game has in the shops.
Checked in a desktop browser on 21 September 2026: ばくばくアニマル, the full official title and Baku Baku Animal each return three results — two Saturn entries and this Game Gear cartridge, each labelled with its platform. Baku Baku returns four: the same three plus ゴン バクバクバクバクアドベンチャー, an unrelated 2012 Nintendo 3DS game. G-3378 and G3378 each return the Game Gear cartridge alone, because we added the code from Sega’s list on 21 September 2026; before that both returned nothing, since the Media Arts Database has no product code for this row.
Three things do not work, and they are worth stating plainly. The platform word does not combine with the title: ばくばくアニマル ゲームギア, the phrase that works best in both shops, returns nothing here. The shop’s spelling ばくばくアニマル世界選手権 returns nothing either, because the catalog uses the official title. And the katakana spelling バクバクアニマル returns nothing, because the catalog does not fold hiragana into katakana. On a Japanese shop shelf the kana to look under is ハ.

What about the Saturn version?
It is the version most people remember, and it sits outside this buying guide, but it would be strange not to mention it.
The Saturn release is the one the critics loved. English Wikipedia collects the praise: Maximum called it “the best ‘next generation’ puzzle game we’ve seen to date”, and Sega Saturn Magazine said it had “some of the most addictive puzzle play since Tetris”. It is also the cheapest way to play the game in Japan today, by a wide margin. If you simply want to play Baku Baku Animal, the Saturn disc is the easy answer. If you want the pocket version — the one Hardcore Gaming 101 rates among the best — it is the Game Gear cartridge, and you have to search for it on purpose.
One arcade puzzle game that went to four home systems, was sold from Japan to Brazil, reached the blue Game Gear Micro, and still never got a Part 2. That closes this Game Gear run, and the thread through all six cartridges is the same: none of the six buying links in this series uses the catalogue number. Ax Battler’s number was misprinted in Sega’s own list; Sylvan Tale’s shop filed it under a different number altogether; Royal Stone’s half-worked; and this one finds two copies in 13. What found each game was a title — but never the same form of it, and this time not even the form on the box.
