The Akihabara Chain-Store Crawl: Four Big Names, Four Very Different Shelves

Why the Chains Are Worth a Separate Trip

The famous Akihabara shops get all the attention, but four national chains also keep used-game shelves within a few minutes of each other here. They look interchangeable from the street and they are not: one is a game specialist, one hides its retro case by the front door, one is a bookstore that happens to buy consoles, and one is an anime shop that shelves games almost as an afterthought. Knowing which is which saves an afternoon.

Store-by-Store Notes

  • Suruga-ya Akihabara Game Hall · — Soto-Kanda 3-9-8, Toyo Building 1F. Weekdays 11:00–21:00, weekends & holidays 10:00–21:00. Heads up: this branch is relocating — it closes for renovation after August 30 and reopens September 25 at Soto-Kanda 3-15-4 2F (the current Suruga-ya Akihabara Trading Card & Board Game Hall address). If you're visiting after August 30, use the new address.
  • Hard Off Akihabara Store 2 · — Soto-Kanda 3-8-1, YS Building, basement to 2F. The glass case just inside the door is retro games, and the shop advertises that it actively buys Nintendo software. Floors 3–4 of the same building are Hobby Off, which sells no games at all. 11:00–20:00, open year-round. Store 1 is 150m away at Soto-Kanda 3-11-2, next door to Mandarake.
  • BOOKOFF Akihabara Ekimae storefront, one minute from the station
Book-Off Akihabara Ekimae · — Kanda-Sakumacho 1-6-4, one minute from the station and the latest closer on this list at 22:00. Worth knowing before you queue: the buyback counter takes software until 22:00 but consoles and hardware only until 21:00, and trading cards until 19:00.
  • Lashinbang Akihabara New Store · — Soto-Kanda 1-7-6, AKIBA Cultures Zone, 1F–2F. Primarily an anime-goods and doujinshi shop that also carries console software. 11:00–21:00, but the buyback counter shuts at 18:00 — three hours before the store does.

Closing Times Are the Real Constraint

These four do not keep the same hours, and the spread is wide enough to wreck a plan. Book-Off runs to 22:00, Suruga-ya and Lashinbang to 21:00, and both Hard Off branches shut at 20:00. If you are working backwards from dinner, walk the Hard Off shops first and leave Book-Off for last.

Before You Go

Look up your want-list on Kataban first and note the product codes (). Chain shelves are sorted by system and publisher rather than by English title, so the code is what gets you to the right spine.

Know the code, find the game

Type a Western title. Get the Japanese name, the cartridge code printed on the spine, and links to the shops that have it.
